‘Hot heritage’ is a term that relates to heritage that excites affective responses from communities, groups or individuals, indicating that the topic commemorated is still ‘hot’.1 This article is a brief discussion of the effectiveness of heritage as a defusing element between groups that suffer religious or ethnic tensions. In order to explore this notion, this article uses two case studies from the Mediterranean; Thessaloniki and Bosina-Herzegovina. For the purposes of this article, the term heritage pertains to monuments such as buildings or structures.
